Get ready for the Big Butterfly Count

July 2026

Butterfly season is one of the most spectacular sights on the Commons during the summer months, and there’s no better time to enjoy it than during the Big Butterfly Count.

Run by Butterfly Conservation, this nationwide survey returns from Friday 17 July to Sunday 9 August, inviting everyone to take part in the world’s largest butterfly survey. Whether you’re a regular visitor to Banstead Commons or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, it’s a simple and rewarding way to connect with nature and contribute to vital conservation work.

Why does the Big Butterfly Count matter?

Butterflies are key indicators of the health of our environment. Because they respond quickly to changes in climate, habitat and weather, tracking their numbers helps us understand how wildlife is faring across the UK.

In recent decades, many species have declined significantly. By taking part in the Big Butterfly Count, you’ll be helping to build a national picture of butterfly populations, allowing conservationists to:

  • Monitor trends and identify species in decline
  • Understand the impacts of climate change
  • Inform habitat management and conservation efforts

The data collected by thousands of participants each year plays a crucial role in protecting species and the habitats they depend on—including the chalk grassland and heathland here on Banstead Commons.

Taking part is easy and can be done almost anywhere—your garden, a local park, or right here on the Commons.

Take part on Banstead Commons

Our sites are home to a rich variety of butterflies during the summer months, particularly across our chalk downland and heathland habitats. Species such as Chalkhill Blue, Small Heath and Common Blue can often be seen in abundance on warm, still days.

By taking part in the Big Butterfly Count here, you’re not only enjoying one of the Commons’ most special seasonal highlights—you’re also helping to protect it for the future.

So why not set aside 15 minutes on your next visit, take in the spectacle, and be part of something bigger this summer?
