Benches outside The Sportsman Public House

December 2025

To assist with enquiries and provide clarity, Banstead Commons Conservators (BCC) issue the following statement regarding the removal of three benches from The Sportsman on Thursday, 11 December.

Banstead Commons Conservators remain committed to supporting the presence of licensed benches on Banstead Commons for the benefit of patrons of The Sportsman.  Since April, the Conservators have been in ongoing communication with the publicans, their landlords, and their legal representatives regarding the safe and lawful placement of benches on the Common. These benches have long been a valued feature, appreciated by customers and visitors alike. We would welcome their return should the appropriate licence be renewed.

For clarity, The Sportsman declined the offer to place licensed benches on the Common this year. The publicans also confirmed that they were not aware of the ownership of the benches that subsequently appeared on the Common without authorisation.

On Thursday, 11 December, after communicating with The Sportsman, BCC staff collected the unauthorised benches.  At the time of collection, The Sportsman was once again given the opportunity to remove the benches themselves or to provide details of the owner, which would have prevented BCC from needing to act.  As no ownership information was provided, Banstead Commons Conservators proceeded with their removal.

BCC has no further comment on this matter.   Any additional enquiries should be directed to The Sportsman.
