Conservation work at Withybed Corner

April 2025

Banstead Commons Conservators are hosting their Volunteer Work Parties in the wooded areas of Withybed Corner during the months of April, May and July.  The work force will be sensitively removing Cherry Laurel from the understorey of the woodland with the aim to remove non-native invasive plants from the habitat.  Cherry Laurel is an invasive plant and its dense canopy and rapid growth outcompetes native species,  greatly reducing biodiversity and preventing natural regeneration in a woodland.

The absence of ground flora, invertebrates, bird life and light are very visible if you stand next to one of the large bushes on the site. Trained staff are carrying out an ecological survey two days prior to working in the area and on the day of the work parties to ensure the work does not disturb any nesting birds.

The team will return to the area again during the winter months to remove the mature trees that are entangled in the tree canopy.  These trees should not be managed at this time of year due to the level of disturbance it would cause to the wider environment.

Our plan over the next five to ten years is to systematically sweep across the whole compartment starting at The Bell moving across to the Mere Road/New Road junction removing all the Cherry Laurel plants and their root systems as we go.

If neighbours would like to find out more about our conservation work in the area or might like to join us no one of the work party days, you would be very welcome.  Our morning briefing session starts at 10am and staff will be available to answer any questions.
